Ib Geertsen was very fascinated with Greenlandic art and artefacts, especially masks. In the 1930s, he started copying Greenlandic drawings from other artists, which started a life long interest in the subject. He also collected Greenlandica and authoured books on the topic.
Geertsen was born 'Ib Geertsen Hansen', which is why he, in his earlier works, signed as either IB. H. or I. H.
