Jens Juel (b. Balslev, Funen 1745, d. Copenhagen 1802)

Portrait of Edel Sophie Sparre-Kaas (1746–1800), married in 1771 to Admiral Frederik Christian Kaas to Nedergård (1727–1804). Blue-green silk dress with bows and frills. Hair up high with pearls and lace handkerchief on top. Large pink pearls around the neck tied with a blue bow at the neck. Red drapery to the left in the background, dark greyish background. C. 1771 (the year of their marriage). Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 78×62 cm. Louis XVI frame.

Provenance: Nedergård on Langeland, which was the Mur-Kaas family estate. The estate was bought in 1936 by merchant Stanley Burmeister (1887–1963), who sold the estate the following year, but kept several of the portraits, including this one. Thence by descent in his family until today.
