Unknown photographer: An original b/w press photograph of an English pilot flanked by two camels. The telegram text goes: “Somewhere in Africa ... Two slow, but dependable 'ships of the dessert' fondly kiss this British flier, somewhere in the dessert”. Back with news telegram dated May 7th 1943. Photo size 17×21 cm. Frame size 33×43 cm.

The WWII British campaign in North Africa took place between June 10th 1940 and May 16th 1943, in other words during a period of time of three years. The campaign included a number of battles that were fought in the Libyan and Egyptian desserts, in Morocco, in Algeria and in Tunisia. In the second battle of el-Alamein (October 23rd-November 3rd 1942) Montgomery was facing the German field marshal Erwin Rommel. The English victory here was to affect the entire passage of what remained of the war.

The cheering spirit that seems to mark the present photograph (shot May 7th 1943) may have to do with the fact that the dessert war at this point was within its very last fase. Only nine days after the picture was taken the British triumph was total.

Condition
