Gustav Völkerling, after, early-20th century

Portrait of Duke Wilhelm of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1784–1831), the first duke of the younger Glücksburg line and head of the house 1825–1831. Unsigned. Handcoloured print. Oval. Visible size 23×18 cm.

The present portrait is after a lithograph by the German artist Gustav Völkerling (active c. 1805-c. 1848 in Dessau). His lithograph was after a drawing by Friedrich Westphal (b. Schleswig 1804, d. Copenhagen 1844). The lithograph by Gustav Völkerling is illustrated in: Prince Hans of Glücksburg, “Hans Majestæt Kong Christian IXs Forældre, Hertug Vilhelm af Glyksborg og hans Hustru Louise, født Prinsesse af Hessen”, Copenhagen 1943, p. 61.

The portrait has been owned by Prince Hans of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1825–1911). He was the son of the above-mentioned Duke Wilhelm and Duchess Louise of Glücksburg, née Princess of Hesse-Kassel. The portrait is part of a uniform picture series of three generations with Prince Hans himself, his father and his maternal grandfather, Landgrave Carl of Hesse-Kassel. Prince Hans of Glücksborg was the brother of, among others, King Christian IX of Denmark, Duke Carl of Glücksburg, Duke Frederik of Glücksburg and Duchess Frederikke of Anhalt-Bernburg. Prince Hans lived for many years in an apartment in the Yellow Palace in Copenhagen. He was childless and when he died, his family at Glücksborg Castle were among the heirs.
