Martinus Rørbye (b. Drammen 1803, d. Copenhagen 1848)

View from Santa Maria in Aracoeli in Rome with a monk drawing water from a well. On the reverse a small figure study of a monk seen from the back. Unsigned. Inscribed “Kloster-Gaarden ved Ara-coeli Rom 1834” (The atrium of Ara-Coeli Rome 1834) and with the artist's colour notes. Further inscribed M. Rørbye on the reverse. Pencil and wash on paper. Sheet size 24×30 cm.

Martinus Rørbye made several drawings from Aracoeli in 1834. In his journal, dated 12 November 1834, he notes (in Danish): “In the morning I sketched in the monastery of Ara-Coeli. In the afternoon: made a small trip with Küchler”.
