2547/5000

Hedeby, penny, ca. 800, 0.72 g, Hbg. 1, Malm. KG 2, this die variant was unknown to Malmer), contemporary perforation, edge damage, flan crack – extremely rare and of the greatest numismatic significance.

Of this category of imitations, which were inspired by the coinage of the Frankish king Charlemagne in Dorestad, only a few specimens are known to exist in private ownership. The composition of the finds suggests a dating to the time of King Gudfred, who is believed, among other things, to have reinforced the Dannevirke.

Ex. BR 852/5002; ex. WCN auc. 2003.
