Of this category of imitations, which were inspired by the coinage of the Frankish king Charlemagne in Dorestad, only a few specimens are known to exist in private ownership. The composition of the finds suggests a dating to the time of King Gudfred, who is believed, among other things, to have reinforced the Dannevirke.
