A large Chinese tapestry embroidered with golden, metallic thread: “With respect from all the staff of Shangdong Post District”, below a net with mirror pieces and tassels. Republic 1912–1949. 90×418 cm.

Provenance: Director General of the Chinese Postal Service Erik Tollefsen (later named To Lo-sen) 1872–1938. He came to China in 1896, where he worked in Customs but later became engaged in the Post Office Services and remained in China until 1932.

The bicycle staff gave this silk embroidery to Erik Tollefsen in gratitude for having introduced bicycles in the delivery of the post.
