Jens Juel (b. Balslev, Funen 1745, d. Copenhagen 1802)

Portrait of a child. A girl, mistakenly called Prince Alexander. Portrait of a light-haired girl with blue eyes, wearing a thin white dress. Half-length portrait, with the right arm in front of the body and a violet shawl over the left shoulder. Presumably, Caroline Amalie, daughter of Louise Augusta and the Duke of Augustenborg née 1796, or Princess Caroline, daughter of Frederik V and Queen Marie, the couple's eldest daughter, née 1793. 1790s. Unsigned. Oil on canvas laid on panel. Oval. 35×29 cm.

Literature: Ellen Poulsen, A Catalogue Raisonné of Jens Juel's Works, reproduced and discussed under no. 794, vol I, p. 213. The present painting depicts the same child as no. 794, that one a full-length portrait with the girl holding a garland of flowers. That one has also previously been described as a portrait of Prince Alexander, reproduced Ellen Poulsen p. 508.

Not until 1991, in her two-volume work on Jens Juel, did Ellen Poulsen point out that the two paintings represent the same child, presumably one of the princesses.

According to the author, it is ruled out that the portraits are representing a boy, as a boy would never hold a flower garland!

Provenance: According to tradition, this is a portrait of Prince Alexander, as written on an old label on the painting's stretcher (in Danish): “Jens Juel: Portrait of Duke Alexander of Augustenborg, Son of Louise Augusta purchased from the Family in Berlin 19–11-30 M. Grosell”.

The same year art dealer Martin Grosell might have sold the picture as a portrait of a prince to master baker Reinhard van Hauen, whose stamped collector's mark with the date 1930 can be seen on the stretcher.

Winkel & Magnussen auction 294, 1942 no. 133, reproduced. p. 7. Here sold as “Duke Alexander of Augustenborg as a Child”.

Bruun Rasmussen auction 724, 2003 no. 1567, reproduced. p. 57, here catalogued as presumably representing one of the two princesses either Caroline Amalie or Caroline.
