Per Kirkeby (b. Copenhagen 1938, d. s.p. 2018)
Untitled, Læsø 2008. Signed and dated on the reverse. Oil on canvas. 90×75 cm.
Provenance: Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, Copenhagen.
Lars Morell: The motif consists of the rocks, which Per Kirkeby in the mid-1990s found in the work of the Italian Renaissance artist Andrea Mantegna. However, the composition, colours and method of painting point back to the paintings Kirkeby created after his trip to the land of the Mayans in 1971. The turquoise oil paint is as fresh as the brash lacquer paint from the 60s and 70s, as are the “impossible” brush strokes towards the sides of the painting. The rock “lights up” in the middle of the dark green – as a ruin hidden in the rainforest. The edged lines of the rock form a structure similar to the cracks in a crumbled building. Kirkeby changed his style over the years – but the vision remained the same.
