As the daughter of an artist Gudrun Knud Larsen was introduced to painting at an early age by her father, the artist Knud Larsen (1865–1922). In addition to the skills she had obtained at home she went on to aducate herself at Skolen for Kunsthåndværk, where she specialised in floral painting. During her time as a student of art she travelled in Germany and a few years after she further more travelled to Paris and Yugoslavia. Gudrun Larsen was very preoccupied with nature thus her motifs where often bouquets of wild flowers, mushrooms or a blooming branch which she depicted in a som hun forstod at gengive meget realistisk. Hun udstillede i en årrække sine akvareller af blomster – sammenlignelige med nærværende billede – på blandt andet Charlottenborg, hvor hun også deltog i en separatudstilling i 1944. Larsen var desuden repræsenteret på Kvindelige Kunstneres retrospektive Udstilling i 1920, hvor flere af kunstnerne på denne auktion også medvirkede.
