Agnes Smidt (b. Lundsmark, Hviding Sogn 1874, d. Erritsø 1952)
A woman standing in a sunny kitchen. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 37×49 cm.
From an early age, Agnes Smidt had an artistic talent and so she moved to Copenhagen to study painting. In Copenhagen, she was admitted to the Drawing and Art Industry School for Women (Tegne- og Kunstindustriskolen for Kvinder), from where she attended from 1893–1896. From 1897–1898 she studied at N. V. Dorph’s painting school. After graduating, she returned to her hometown Lundsmark in the South of Jutland with the aim of strengthening the culture among young adults who had returned to their home region. She never married, but ventured to take six girls into her care at the same time as she established a kind of high school for young men. Later she also did summer courses for young women. Outside the South of Jutland her artistic work has remained almost unknown as she did not maintain the connection to Copenhagen. Smidt is best known for her commissioned portraits, but also concentrated on motifs from her close surroundings, such as from her hometown Lundsmark or as the present work, an interior of a kitchen.
Minimal crackles. A few minor peelings. One minimal perforation in the bottom left corner. In need of cleaning. The canvas needs tightening.
