Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin (b. Yelabuga 1832, d. St. Petersburg 1898)

Russian spring landscape with a serpentine stream. Signed I. Sh. (in Cyrillic). Oil on canvas. 40×55 cm.

Provenance: The Norwegian Knut Domaas (1873–1959), editor of the Norwegian newspaper “Norges Handels- og Sjøfartstidende” 1914–1943, which in 1987 changed name to “Dagens Næringsliv”. Knud Domaas helped a Russian refugee, who fled from Russia to Norway during the Russian revolution in 1917. The refugee gave Knud Domaas the painting, which he had brought to Norway as capital, in gratitude. Knud Domaas had no direct heirs, and the painting was therefore donated to the present owner's grandparents, who lived in Nes, Hallingdal.
