Knud Jans (b. Dragør 1916, d. s.p. 1985)
Untitled. Signed Knud Jans, IV, 1967. Red and brown glazed earthenware sculpture. H. 28 cm. W. 20 cm. D. 13 cm.
Knud Jans was a self-taught ceramicist and artist. He began his career in 1948 and opened his own ceramics workshop in 1958. From 1951 to 1956, he was a member of the artist collective Spiralen, where he distinguished himself with his spontaneous, abstract forms – strongly inspired by the renowned CoBrA painter Asger Jorn. Jans worked experimentally with materials and was deeply engaged in the tactile qualities of an artwork, a focus evident in his ceramics, paintings, and graphic works.
His art has been widely represented in exhibitions – from his debut show at Klyngen (1945–47) to Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling and his extensive work through Spiralen. Knud Jans’ pieces unite functionality with sculptural form, created with a profound understanding of ceramics as a medium. His unique style, where raw and refined elements meet, makes his art timeless and highly sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts alike.
