Christine Løvmand (b. Copenhagen 1803, d. s.p. 1872)
“En Hare og Fuglevildt”. Still life with a hare and game birds. Signed and dated C. Løvmand 1830. Oil on canvas. 50×57 cm.
Christine Løvmand was taught by the floral painter J. L. Camradt (1779–1849) and in the period from 1831 to 1834 she received private lessons from C. W. Eckersberg (1783–1853). This was long before 1888 when the Art Academy in Copenhagen began accepting female students, thus the lessons took place on Sundays just as there was no opportunity for her to study the nude figure. Her work is mainly still lifes with fruits and flowers and occasionally precious objects.
After the early death of her father, Christine Løvmand supported herself by selling her art and by giving young women lessons in drawing and painting. Her students counted the famous Danish actress, Johanne Louise Heiberg as well as Løvmands cousin Eleonore Tscherning (1817–1890), several af whose paintings are offered on auction at present. Løvmand made a study trip to Germany in 1842 and a shorter trip to Paris in 1847.
She exhibited every year with only a few exceptions from 1827 to 1872 and sold nine works to The Royal Collection of Paintings. Furthermore Løvmands works were exhibited at The Nordic Exhibition of Art and Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen in 1872 and The Womens Exhibition in 1895 and The Retrospective Exhibition of Women Artists in 1920, and later in several exhibitions in the 1980'es at The Danish National Gallery and Kunstforeningen København.
