Central Russia, 17th century

A Russian icon depicting the Christ Pantocrator giving out blessings and carrying a Gospel Book with the text “come blessed my Father” visible. He is flanked by the saints Zosima and Sasvatij, who founded the Solovetsky Monastery. Tempera on wood panel with double kovcheg. Central Russia, 1650–1690. 31.5×27.5 cm.

The day of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary (Luke 1: 26–38) is celebrated in church on 25 March.

The day is always the last Sunday before Palm Sunday, nine months before Christmas Eve (since a pregnancy lasts nine months).

On church iconostases, the doors into the altar room are located under the icon of Christ Pantocrator in the local row – through which the path leads to the Kingdom of God since the doors open to the church's most holy place: the altar. The doors are called the royal doors. They are only opened on special occasions during the service. The most common motif on these doors is the Annunciation (top) and the four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in the spaces below.
