Michael Ancher (b. Bornholm 1849, d. Skagen 1927)

Purchased by Skagens Museum in December 2012.

“Kunstdommere”. Art critics. Study of the painters Laurits Tuxen and P. S. Krøyer discussing an artwork in Krøyer's studio. C. 1906. Double-signed M. A. Oil on canvas. 95×140 cm.

Provenance: Descendants of tobacco manufacturer Heinrich Hirschsprung, founder of Den Hirschsprungske Samling (The Hirschsprung Collection), till now.

The final painting from 1906 shows Tuxen and Krøyer, but also their two painter colleagues Holger Drachmann and J. F. Willumsen. It is an even larger piece with the measurements 157×223 cm and owned by The Museum of National History Frederiksborg Castle. “Kunstdommere” ranks as one of Michael Ancher's masterpieces and in the very lively study here Tuxen and Krøyer are sitting close to each other on a sofa. Krøyer gestures while explaining something about the artwork that is outside the picture frame and that they both are studying intensely. His friend Tuxen lounges, he is listening, observing and thinking.
