The English painter, Dorothea Sharp, began her artistic education at the age of 21 when she received an inheritance allowing her to attend Richmond Art School after which she went on to study at Regent Street Polytechnic. On a study trip to Paris the meeting with impressionism and particularly the French painter Claude Monet (1840–1926) had a great impact on Sharp and became a cotinuous source of inspiration to her in her work. Her motifs where often full of joy and movement, as for instance dance or play, and were excecuted with spontaneous brushstrokes in a bright and intense palette of colours, as seen in the present painting on auction. She travelled extensively in Italy, in France and in Great Brittain. Sharp became a member of Society of Women Artists, af Royal Society of British Artists i 1907 and of The Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1922. She exhibited at The Royal Academy from 1901 till 1948 and her first solo exhibition was shown with great success at Connell Gallery in 1933.
