“Corvetten Najaden Under Christiansøe”. The corvette “Najaden” at Christiansø. Unsigned. Inscribed by the artist “Corvetten Najaden Under Christiansøe. Morgen kl. 5.30, 10. Juli 1833” (The corvette “Najaden” at Christiansøe, morning at 5.30, 10 July 1833). Unsigned. Drawing ink, pencil and wash on paper mounted on paper. Sheet size 16.5×21.5 cm.

Eckersberg writes in his diary 10 July 1833 (in Danish): “Wednesday. With a light wind at our backs during the night, we approached the island of Christiansø, where the bishop was to be set ashore. At four o'clock in the morning the harbour pilot and Lieutenant Normann, second-in-command on the island, as well as the priest arrived (... ) A light wind blew from the west as the dark clouds spread out. At 5:30 pm, after the corvette had signalled the fortress with a three-round salvo, we went with the harbour pilot who brought the bishop and Councillor of State Steenfeldt ashore in his sloop. The harbour pilot had the corvette salute the bishop with a six-round salvo. The morning was spent in a very pleasant way, partly in Lieutenant Normann's house, partly exploring this very peculiar and picturesque rocky island, which is quite odd (...) At 12 noon we returned to the corvette, which had spent the time tacking. At 2 pm, a brisk gale from the west rolled in. The sky was beautiful with lovely clouds, we stayed on the southern side of Bornholm, and the corvette therefore had plenty of practice in tacking all afternoon”.
