At his side, New Zealander companion George Lowe (1924–2013). Developing from the 1950s. Back with remains of attached news telegram, return stamp, editing stamp as well as pencil note. Oak wood frame and double glazing. Visible frame 21×20 cm. Frame size 30×29 cm.

New Zealander Edmund Hillary (1919–2008) and Nepalese Tenzing Norgay (1914–1986) were the first human beings to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953, but it wasn't until June 2 that the news reached the world. That same day, Queen Elizabeth II had been crowned in London and the announcement that a British subject had climbed the world's highest mountain added to the uplifting mood at a time when Britain was suffering from economic and political recession. Less than a week later, Edmund Hillary was knighted by the Queen.
