Frits Thaulow (b. Oslo 1847, d. Volendam 1906)
Purchased by Skagens Museum in June 2015
Shipwreck on the beach. Signed Frits Thaulow. Oil on canvas. 27×40 cm.
Frits Thaulow was educated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. He wanted to become a marine painter and was therefore privately trained by C. F. Sørensen and later by Holger Drachmann.
Thaulow visited Skagen in 1872 together with Holger Drachmann. In July 1879 Thaulow again went to Skagen this time together with his wife and daughter and the Norwegian painter colleague Christian Krohg.
The present painting must be from one of his two visits to Skagen, presumably the first one, since it shows a strong inspiration from Holger Drachmann.
Skagen Museum owns several works by Thaulow from Skagen dated 1879.
