A Roman marble head of a woman, slightly downcast gaze turned to the left, hair parted in the middle and collected in the neck. On stand. Roman imperial period, c. 2nd century AD. H. 20 cm.

Provenance: In the collection of Danish sculptor Hanne Varming. Acquired in 1990 from Kunsthallen Kunstauktioner, Copenhagen, auction 396, lot. no. 427. Previously from a Danish manor. The head was part of a large antique collection acquired 'en bloc' on auction in Rome mid 19th century.

Similar hairdo with horizontal locks and facial traits can be seen in a female head in Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, inv. no. I.N. 1806. Made in the Roman fifth century BC revival style.
