Piotr Iosifovich Smukrovich (b. Tallinn 1878, d. St. Petersburg 1942)
At a town gate, presumably from Erzurum in the Eastern Turkey. Signed and dated P. Smukrovich 1917 (in Cyrillic). Watercolor on paper laid on paper. Sheet size 35×47 cm.
The motif is presumably connected to the military operation of the Russian army at Erzurum during WW1.
Provenance: Bruun Rasmussen auction 79, 1956 no. 228. Here cataloged as P. Skukrowitz.
The paper has turned slightly brown. Some foxing. Drawing pin holes in each corner with minor paper loss.
