Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's 1953 Mount Everest expedition was - besides being the most famous of them all - the fifth British expedition to the world's highest mountain. On May 29, 1953, the two men reached the mountain's highest peak, 8,849 meters above sea level. The other four expeditions, all unsuccessful, had taken place in 1921, 1922, 1924 and 1933.
