Wilhelm Marstrand (b. Copenhagen 1810, d. s.p. 1873)

A young man is courting a young woman sitting and sewing outside a farmhouse in Dalarna in Sweden. Signed and dated W. M. 1852. Oil on canvas. 50×63 cm.

Following a suggestion by Hans Christian Andersen, Marstrand took Grethe on a honeymoon to Dalarna in 1850. Andersen thought that the area would provide a rich visual resource for Marstrand to be inspired by. In July 1851, Martsrand returned to the area alone and painted numerous studies, including for the large painting “Kirkefærd i Dalarne i Sverige” (Church procession in Dalarna in Sweden) from 1853 (The National Gallery of Denmark, inv. no. KMS618).
