Marilyn Minter (b. Shreveport, Louisiana 1948)

“Wangechi Gold 1”, 2009. Edition 1/5 + 2AP. Signed on a gallery label on the reverse M. Minter. C-print. Visible size 101×67 cm.

Provenance: Andrehn-Schiptjenko, Stockholm (label on the reverse: MIN00063). Provenance: Private collection, Denmark.

The American artist Marilyn Minter (b.1948) likes to blur the traditional distinctions of art and pop culture as it is seen in fashion, pornography, horror movies etc. Her photographs have through the years caused scandals due to their often erotic or pornographic nature. The photographs here presented adress the complex relationship between conceptions of disgust and desire. Minter wants to make the viewer aware of both the pleasure of looking as well as the shame, that follows. And like in her now famous video work “Green Pink Caviar” (2009), shown in the lobby of MoMA and on Times Square, New York, she focuses closely on the details of the model's body; her shiny skin and open mouth, dripping with gold.
