Danish painter, c. 1710

Purchased by Det Nationalhistoriske Museum Frederiksborg in September 2021.

Portrait of Rasmus Æreboe (1685–1744) with full-bottomed wig, brocade vest and red velour cape. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 77×63.

Rasmus Æreboe became an orphan early and managed himself through his upbringing to a good exam, which led to a job as a private secretary for Just Juel, who as an envoy extraordinaire was going to Russia. It meant travelling and experiences. The legation met Peter the Great in Narva and accompanied him for years to his ever-changing places of sojourn. Several trips followed i.a. 1713 as courier for Frederik IV to the Tsar, who was in Helsinki. Due to the war, the voyage had to take place in an open dinghy across the Baltic Sea! His merits were rewarded in 1715 by the King with the appointment of notary public in Copenhagen. In 1722, he was a co-founder of the Nordic region's first faience factory, the Store Kongensgade factory, c. 1725–26 director of the factory.
