Jens Adolf Jerichau spent his last time in Paris, where he committed suicide in 1916. In his recently published book Mikael Wivel discusses Jerichau in relation to Pablo Picasso, who allegedly showed aconsiderable interest in the work of the Danish painter. This painting is one of the artist's last works and and one of the very few examples of still lives in his production.
