Jean-Baptiste Cresson (b. 1720, d. 1781)

A pair of Louis XV giltwood 'fauteuil a la reine' armchairs each painted and gilded and with padded back, arms and seat covered in cut-velvet, the frame carved with C-scrolls and foliage, each with the back rail stamped 'I.B. CRESSON'. France, mid-18th century. (2)

The Parisian ébénist Jean-Baptiste Cresson was from a famous family of cabinetmakers active from the Régence period in the early 18th century until the Revolution. The shape of the armchairs is referred to as “Fauteuils a la Reine” - a special shape that emerged during the Rococo period and is characterised by its lightness, elegance, padded seat, high four-sided back and open sides.
