Vilhelm Hammershøi (b. Copenhagen 1864, d. s.p. 1916)
Purchased by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in November 2011.
Evening interior with a figure at a table, presumably from the dining room of the Hammershøi family in a flat on Frederiksberg Allé in Copenhagen, the painter's childhood home. Unsigned. Black and red chalk on paper. Visible size 23×18 cm.
In Poul Vad, “Hammershøi - Værk og liv”, 2003 a quite similar drawing is reproduced on p. 85. Also, on p. 314 and 408 a painting showing the dining room is depicted and here one finds the same room structure and furniture as in the present work. Both drawing and painting are from 1891, so the work here was probably executed in the same period.
