The magnificent remains of the ancient Greek colony Poseidonia (Paestum) made a great impression on both Constantin Hansen and his travel companion Jørgen Roed, when they visited the place in the spring of 1838. The visit was one of the highlights of their Italian journey. Both painters made many sketches of the ruins later to be used for inspiration after returning to Denmark.
The study for “The temple of Ceres in Pæstum” from 1838 (29×30 cm) is at the National Gallery of Denmark.
