Finn Juhl (b. Frederiksberg 1912, d. Ordrup 1989)

“FJ 42”. Rarely offered mahogany armchair. Seat and back upholstered with brown leather. Designed and made approx. 1942 by cabinetmaker Niels Vodder.

Provenance: Gifted by Finn Juhl to present owner's grandmother in connection with her studies at Skolen for Boligindretning (the School of Interior Design where FJ taught), graduating class of 1955. The model designed for the Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition in 1942 (see photo), hence made in few examples, for Editor Westermann’s villa, amongst others. Present chair was used by Finn Juhl, presumably in his house or at his drawing studio before he gifted it to present owner’s grandmother. The chair is an example of Finn Juhl pursuing several paths in his design – both the organically sculptural but also the more rational modernistic. This model shows features that later reappeared in several of Finn Juhl’s pieces – for example the small “horns” at the top corners of the back.
