Michael Ancher (b. Bornholm 1849, d. Skagen 1927)

Three fishermen on Skagen beach. Evening sun. Signed and dated M. A. 93. Oil on canvas. 61×100 cm.

The present painting is presumably a study for the painting “Mens Vaaddet kastes. Aftensol” (While the seine is thrown) from 1893 with the dimensions 111×144 cm, which was exhibited at Charlottenborg 1894 no. 17.

Easily recognizable to the left in the painting is fisherman and lifeguard Ole Svendsen (1830–1906), who served in the Danish navy during the Three Years' War. In 1862 he became a permanent employee of Skagen's lifeboat. He received several medals of honour, he was i.a. decorated with the Silver Cross of the Order of Dannebrog 1887. Michael Ancher often placed the stout rescuer in a prominent place in his paintings, e.g. in the two well-known ones: “Vil han klare Pynten” (Will he round the point, The Art Museums of Skagen, Inv. No. 1837) and “Redningsbåden køres gennem Klitterne” (The lifeboat is driven through the dunes, The National Gallery of Denmark, Inv. No. KMS1222).
