A Chinese lotus shaped porcelain dish decorated in underglaze blue moulded petals in low row relief decorated with Tibetan/Sanskrit characters. Standing on a ring foot. Marked Wanli 1573–1620 and from the period. Diam. 20 cm. H. 5.5 cm.
Provenance: Present from an English noble family to the present Danish owner in the 1950s.
Literature: He Li: Chinese Ceramics, the new standard guide. London 1996. S.a. Tav. 431. The dish, made for use by Buddhists, features neatly molded petals - the refinement of form and drawing indicate that it was made by skilled craftsmen at the Imperial workshop. The exterior bears individual Sanskrit characters. Similar to an example in the Shanghai Museum this dish must have been part of a group ordered by the court.
