Sweyn Forkbeard, 985–1013, Lund (?), penny, Crux / Small Cross type, moneyer: Asketil / Oscetel, 1.87 g, Malmer 15 / 1081 – an extremely rare type, part of Malmer’s large but chronologically very homogeneous die chain 101, which can with certainty be dated to the reign of Sweyn Forkbeard around 996–997, and thus likely represents the very earliest coinage produced at what would later become the main mint, Lund.
In his article “English Dies used in the Scandinavian Imitative Coinages” (Hikuin 11, 1985), Mark Blackburn demonstrates that the type in question (B/r) was struck using a genuine English obverse die, which had been brought to Scandinavia to be used in connection with the initiation of local coin production.
