Princess Thekla of Ysenburg and Büdingen

Five-winged Empire style mahogany room divider, ascending in steps towards the middle, adorned with gilt-bronze rosettes, open cross-fields at the bottom, above which smooth yellow silk with agramans, in the top panel fields five watercolors framed behind glass, middle upper wing with a gilt-bronze ornament in the form of two floating angels holding a wreath and a garland, in which is written respectively “Meerholz. Oh du Heimatflur, Oh du Heimatflur!”, backs with yellow silk in folds. Early-20th century. H. 162 cm. W. in total 225.

The five watercolors on paper comprises two town views and three landscapes, painted by Princess Thekla of Ysenburg and Büdingen (1878–1950). Two signed. Thekla z. Y., three signed Thekla, one probably undated, one dated 1905, one dated July 1905, one dated 1906, one dated 27/7 1906.

Heimatflut can be translated as home area and Meerholz is located in Ysenburg and Büdingen.

Princess Thekla of Ysenburg and Büdingen was the sister of Princess Hertha of Ysenburg and Büdingen. Princess Hertha married Prince Albert of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg in 1920 (his second marriage). He became the grandfather of the four sisters mentioned below.

Condition

Minor wear due to age and use, including silk with spots and tears in various degrees; front silk with nails or screws at top (apparently something previously hang there); wood with some chips and scratches; the watercolors are examined in frames.
