Asta Nielsen (b. Copenhagen 1881, d. Frederiksberg 1972)
Songbird. Signed Asta Nielsen, 1911. Collage of fabric. Visible size 35×34 cm.
Asta Nielsen works extensively in Germany during the early days of the film industry, but in 1937 she moves back home to Denmark. This move is partly due to the rise of Nazism, partly due to the arrival of sound film, which does not seem to suit her temperament as an actress. After this, she only gives a few performances. Instead, she writes short stories and makes fabric collages, often made with materials from her old film costumes. Her style is recognizable and shows a fine visual eye, such as the present bird sitting on the edge of a wood.
Signs of age, wear and tear; damp discolourations/stains to the fabric. Examined in frame.
Please note: The item is subject to the Anti-Money Laundering Act. In the event of a hammer price of DKK 50,000 or more, including buyer’s premium, the buyer must submit a copy of a valid photo ID and proof of address in order to collect the item.
