Paul Fischer (b. Copenhagen 1860, d. Gentofte 1934)

Busy day at the fish market at Gammel Strand in Copenhagen. Signed and dated Paul Fischer 1919. Oil on canvas. 92×125 cm.

The present painting gives a really good impression of Paul Fischer's capability and what has made him so popular over the years. He catches the big city's pulse. We are in the heart of Copenhagen on Gammel Strand with Thorvaldsen's Museum and trams in the background. The women from Skovshoved selling fish, a fisherman talking to two fishermen's wives, a young maid has been shopping, a young mother or nanny with a baby carriage, two small boys talking together and the police officer is overlooking it all and is keeping order.

Provenance: Private collection, Monte Carlo.
