Christian Mølsted (b. Dragør 1862, d. s.p. 1930)

“Ankerliggere i Storm paa Køge Bugt. I Forgrunden Fregatten Jylland, med strøgne Stænger og Ræer”. Seascape with sailing ships at anchor during a storm. In the foreground the Danish frigate “Jylland”. Signed and dated Chr. Mølsted 1928. Oil on canvas. 116×137 cm.

Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1929 no. 354.

Provenance: The painting has been in the Rasmussen family until today, originally acquired by consul Thorvald Julius Emil Rasmussen (1884–1960) from Korsør.

In 1880, before Christian Mølsted was accepted into the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he was offered a place on the summer expedition of the frigate “Jylland” to Madeira, England and Russia. On the journey he completed a large amount of sketches. It is probable that this painting is executed based on one of these, which explains the year “1880” written after the title on the reverse of the stretcher.
