Adolph F. Muhr (d. 1913), after: An American b/w photograph of the apache chief Geronimo (Goyathlay; 1829–1909). Back stamped “Cleveland Public Library - NEA Picture Collection” and dated August 27th 1932. Photo size 20.5×14.5 cm. Frame size 43×33 cm.
This fairly early reproduction of Adolph F. Muhr's famous exposure shows the legendary apache Geronimo during the last phase of his life, a time when he lived in an Oklahoma reservation and made a living selling photographs of himself. In the earlier years Geronimo had been a proud warrior and medicine man and one of the last Indian chiefs, who fought the US government's systematic subjugation of Indian self-assertion.
The name “Geronimo” was always the name used by his opponents, never by himself. Among his people he was known as “Goyathlay”. “Geronimo”, a Mexican interpretation of the pronunciation of his birth name, is also the Spanish version of the church father Hieronymus.
The present photograph is interesting thereby that it is a relatively early reproduction of Adolph F. Muhr's original image.
This is an American b/w photograph from 1932, which is a reproduction of an original photograph taken between 1900–1909. The present reproduction shows normal signs of handling. Furthermore slightly yellowed back due to ageing.
