George Chinnery 1774-1852

Portrait of Cornet A.S. Pennington. Pencil, watercolour and touches of body colour. On cream paper. Inscribed in ink A.S. Pennington Cornet 3rd.Rohillah Cav?. Attached to blue mount, inscribed George Chinnery del Calcutta. Embossed collectors stamp BW (Lugt 420) 260×192 mm.

Most likely a commissioned formal portrait, depicting in fine detail the face of a young ambitious cornet, seated in cavalry uniform. Chinnery became bored with these commissions, giving the sitters only what they expect; conventional portraits in the Georgian tradition. Folds.
