Nalini Malani (b. Karachi 1946)

“Stories retold: Happenings IV”, 2008. Signed N. Malani 08. Mixed media (Watercolour, acrylic, enamel). 183×91 cm.

Provenance: Art Foundation Mallorca, Spain. Acquired here by the present owner.

Nalini Malani is considered to be the pioneer of video art in her home country, India. In her artistic work, Malani is curious, expansive and exploratory, regardless of whether the medium is painting, installation art or animation – standstill or movement.

Malani views the artist's position as a unique opportunity to engage in social activism – to give a voice to those marginalized and ignored by history – and her works of art thus often have a political dimension.

She has achieved wide international recognition and is today represented in several museums and collections worldwide, including at the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; the British Museum, London; and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
