Ella Heide (b. Flensborg 1871, d. 1956)
A Summer day at the house of P. S. Krøyer in Skagen. Signed E. Heide Skagen. Oil on canvas. 32×42.5 cm. Unframed.
Ella Heide was connected to the Skagen artists through her brother, Hans Brodersen(1858–1943), who was married to Henny Brodersen (1868–1960), who formed a romantic connection to P. S. Krøyer's (1851–1909) when Krøyer was at the end of his life. The Brodersen family home was known as “Det Hvide Hus” (The White House) and was a lively center of many gatherings of the art colony. One of her works titled “Det Hvide Hus” is situated in the collection of Skagens Museum. Heide had visited Skagen as early as the 1890'es and from 1908 she lived in Skagen during every summer half-year. From the painting by Johannes Wilhjelm (1868–1938), “Malerinder på Skagen” (Painters at Skagen) from 1912, where she is depicted working along side the painter Tupsy Clement (1871–1959) and G. F. Clement (1867–1933), we know she was connected to the younger generation of artists in Skagen. As far as we know, Ella Heide had no formal artistic training. However, her work was greatly sought after by the general public. She exhibited in Skagen in 1908 and 1931 and sold a number of her paintings with motifs concentrated on the landscape and the houses, specifically the artist homes, of Skagen.
