Carl Gustaf Pilo, school of

Portrait of King Frederik V of Denmark (1723–1766), standing pose wearing a long wig, armor and the Order of the Elephant. Unsigned. Inscribed on the stretcher “H. Gartenzimmer No. 85”.Oil on canvas. 115×85 cm.

King Frederik V of Denmark was married to Queen Louise, née Princess of Great Britain. They became parents to, among others, King Christian VII and Landgrave Louise of Hesse-Kassel. The latter married Landgrave Carl of Hesse-Kassel. They became parents to, among others, Duchess Louise of Glücksburg, g.m. Duke Wilhelm of Glücksburg. They became parents to, among others, Duke Carl of Glücksburg, Duke Friedrich of Glücksburg, Duchess Friederikke of Anhalt-Bernburg and King Christian IX of Denmark. King Frederik V of the Danish, Oldenburg royal family was thus the great-grandfather of this latter group of children. When King Christian IX was proclaimed King of Denmark in 1863 as the first of the Glücksborg family, he was therefore also of the Oldenburg family.

Carl Gustav Pilo painted several official portraits of King Frederik V and his workshop helped to meet the need for more works, for example donated as gifts. The present portrait seems to have been modeled on Pilo's portrait of the King, which is owned by the National Museum in Stockholm.
