Laurits Tuxen (b. Copenhagen 1853, d. s.p. 1927)

A couple sits in the rocky landscape of Capri overlooking the sea and the small town. Dated Capri 3[?]/4 97. Oil on panel. 15×24 cm.

In Lise Svanholm's Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Laurits Tuxen there are several works registered with the same measurements from Ursule and Laurits Tuxen's stay on Capri in 1897. However, no one completely matches the present motif and dating.

Provenance: Bruun Rasmussen auction 341, 1975 no. 400.

Laurits Tuxen married in 1886 in Brussels the Belgian woman Ursule de Baisieux (1862–1899).

In 1897 the couple went on a long trip abroad to recover after their four-year-old daughter Elsa died of tuberculosis in 1896. This painting is from this trip. From the same stay on Capri see also catalog no. XXX.

The book “Tuxens Breve. Mellem kunst og kærlighed” " by Marianne Abrahamsen has just been published. It consists of the couple's correspondence from their engagement in 1885 until Ursule's untimely death in 1899, only 36 years old. The letters provide an insight into their great love and into their innermost thoughts and feelings, sorrows and hopes and their in many ways unconventional marriage filled with art, travel and great experiences.

Correction 27 May: The painting is framed in a Kleis frame.
