Anders Lunde (b. Copenhagen 1809, d. s.p. 1886)
Portrait of Jørgen Christian Schiødte (1815–1884). Signed and dated A. L. 1845–1846. Pencil on paper. Sheet size 21.5×17 cm. Unframed.
Provenance: Circolo Scandinavo / Skandinavisk Forening i Rom.
During his time at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Anders Lunde primarily focused on portrait painting but chose to switch to landscape painting after completing his studies at the Academy. Despite not receiving a scholarship from the Academy, Lunde traveled to Rome in 1842 to study the Italian landscape. During his stay, he sent works back to Denmark, which were well received, leading to him being awarded a two-year scholarship in 1844–45. Therefore, he did not return to Denmark until 1847.
In both his portraits and landscapes, Anders Lunde was known for his careful and detail-oriented renderings. In the present portrait of the Danish naturalist and ethnologist Jørgen Christian Schiødte, one can observe a focus on detail and an almost sensory depiction, including reflections in the fine, smooth hair, contrasting with the more coarse and curly beard.
Mounted on cardboard. The paper has turned slightly yellow. Minimal discolourations in corners. Leftovers from tape on the reverse.
