Raphael Carl Reinhard (b. Kloster Veilsdorf 1820, d. Bernburg 1903)
Moonlight landscape with a view to Ballenstedt Castle. Signed R. Reinhard. Oil on canvas. 49×72 cm.
Raphael Carl Reinhard was a court painter at the Castle Ballenstedt in Sachsen-Anhalt in 1875–1895 and taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bernburg.
The painting of Ballenstedt Castle is associated with Princess Friederike of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1811–1902). She was born at Gottorp Castle and the daughter of Duke Wilhelm and Duchess Louise of Glücksburg, née Princess of Hessen-Kassel. Princess Friederike was thus the sister of, among others, King Christian of Denmark as well as Duke Carl of Glücksborg and Duke Friedrich of Glücksborg. Princess Friederike married Duke Alexander Carl of Anhalt-Bernburg in 1834 and the newlywed couple moved into Ballenstedt Castle. However, the Duke's condition had weakened and the running of Anhalt-Bernburg was therefore taken care of by Duchess Friederike until his death in 1863. She remained in Ballenstedt and was a strong connection point for the Glücksburg family. For example, her sister, Princess Marie of Glücksburg, also lived in Ballenstedt with her husband, Colonel Friedrich von Lasberg. Her mother, Duchess Louise of Glücksborg, also moved to Ballenstedt and died here in 1867. Duchess Frederikke died childless in 1902 and among the heirs was her family at Glücksborg Castle.
