Jens Bircherod (b. 1664, d. 1720)

J. Bircherod: Breviarium equestre, seu de Illustrissimo & Inclytissimo Equestri Ordine Elephantino [...]. [Cph]: Johs. Laverentzen 1704. With 14 full page engravings and 15 copperengraved textual vignettes (incl. title-vignette) showing insignias of the Elephant order, coins, coats-of-arms, ceremonies, and costumes by Johan Friedlein and Louis Chomont-Boudan. Bound in cont. full leather gilt on spine. Binding weakly marked of use and inner hinge weak, some leaves with restored tears, some a little stained.

The author spent 30 years in collecting material for this history of the Elephant order, which origin he claims goes back to the mythical age. The Elephant order is the highest Danish order, and usually only given to Royalty. A few exceptions have been made; after the Second World War it was given to the generals Montgomery and Eisenhower as well as the Danish scientist Niels Bohr. Bibl. Danica II,735.
