A Mongolian partly gilt copper repoussé figure of Amitayus, he is seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus throne, hands joined on the lap holding a now missing bowl or nectar vase, he is wearing a richly pleated dhoti, flowing robe and heavy jewellery, the five petalled crown being loose. Sealed bottom. 17th-18th century. Weight 592 g. H. 17.5 cm.

Provenance: Director General of the Chinese Postal Service Erik Tollefsen (later named To Lo-sen) 1872–1938. He came to China in 1896, where he worked in Customs but later became engaged in the Post Office Services and remained in China until 1932.

Condition

Wear, scratches, two possible minor repair on bottom of base (round metal filling), some parts (hair) with verdigris.
