Original black-and-white press photograph of the American airship USS Macon flying over Manhattan in the summer of 1933. Back with stamped date of development or publication (August 15, 1945). Black painted wooden frame with double glass. Visible size 16×21.5 cm. Frame size 25×30 cm.
The USA used almost exclusively helium as lifting gas in its airships – a ressource that North America had a natural monopoly on – and the country's authority in this area, The U.S. National Helium Reserve, effectively ensured that other countries did not have access to this element. Others, including Nazi Germany, were forced to use the much more flammable hydrogen.
This is an original black-and-white silver gelatin press photograph from 1945 or earlier, which shows normal signs of handling. Has yellowed.
